The Vanishing Face of Gaia: A Final Warning by James Lovelock James Lovelock’s training as a physician and his ability to have a career as reputable independant scientist allows him to present a unique, holistic yet somewhat troubling perspective on global heating and its impacts presently underway and likely to get much worse on our home planet. I found this book to be as important as the James Hansen book below however the Lovelock book was easier to read and presents a broader perspective of the problem.

Storms of my grandchildren: The truth about the coming climate catastrophe and our last chance to save humanity by James Hansen, considered to be the world’s top climate scientist.

See also this web page Mr. Hansen is maintaining that offers colour versions of the images presented in his book along with more information on the science of global warming.

René Lévesque by Daniel Poliquin

English – Another quick, easy and fascinating read in the « Extraordinary Canadians » Series on this important figure in Québec history. As I am not originally from Québec, I found this book helped me understand René Lévesque’s role in recent Québec history, and the social context that played such a role in making Québec what it is today.

The Gulag Archipeligo, 1918-1956; An experiment in litterary investigation by Aleksandr I. Solzhenistsyn. Translated from Russian by Thomas P. Whitney

English – This book was written by the author in a clandestine manner, after his years in the gulag system and while still living in the USSR. An incredible strength of will was required to not only survive the gulag prison experiences in northern USSR but to then write about those experiences.  Also of interest, the author’s perspective on how citizens were afraid to speak out against the « system » and how the absence of written historical documents on the gulag system helped perpetuate a culture of fear and ignorance of what the government was really doing to its own citizens.
