DDO Traffic and circulation committee

As you may recall, on May 14, 2009, Mrs. Dragica Malecic, an elderly pedestrian from Roxboro, was hit and killed by a truck at the intersection of Sources Blvd and Roger Pilon in Dollard Des Ormeaux. A collection of information related to this event can be found at: http://aprpr.org/?p=91

On another occasion, on March 4 2010, a Mother and child were hit by a large truck at another intersection on Sources in DDO. See more info at: http://aprpr.org/?p=1069

In an email dated June 26 2009, the mayor of DDO wrote: « We have undertaken to update our crossings and make them safer. »

On this the 5th anniversary of Mrs. Malecic’s death, would it be possible to get an update as to what exactly has DDO undertaken to make pedestrian crossings safer, especially along Sources Blvd in DDO? »

Also, there appears to never have been published any details as to why Mrs. Malecic was hit by the truck at an intersection with full traffic and pedestrian crossing signals. There have also not been many details about the March 4th 2010 incident.

Would there be any post incident information or recommendations available that could be shared with all residents, including drivers and elderly pedestrians, so that we can learn from these unfortunate incidents and allow residents and drivers to try and avoid putting themselves in situations similar to the ones that caused these incidents in the first place?

I have witnessed trucks and vehicles on Sources Blvd honking their horns as they approach a yellow traffic light that is about to turn red in order to alert other drivers they are about to drive through a red light. And I have witnessed large trucks exiting the Rideau Funeral Home onto Sources Blvd. I have been in situations where it is very difficult or impossible to see the driver of these large trucks from the sidewalk and on some occasions, trucks are exiting onto Sources even if the truck does not have a green light to proceed.

I would also like to offer a suggestion. Since the corner at Sources Blvd and Sunnydale does offer a 4-way pedestrian crossing (red traffic light in all directions), would it be possible to put pedestrian crossing signals in all directions at that corner. I have witnessed seniors wanting to cross Sunnydale there who were not aware they could cross Sunnydale when the 4 way red traffic light was occurring to allow pedestrians to cross there. 4-way pedestrian signals there would make it clearer for all pedestrians.

Thank you in advance for follow up information to these questions on public safety.

Re: Update on Pedestrian Safety Improvements on Sources Blvd since May 14 2009

On May 14, 2009, Mrs. Dragica Malecic, an elderly pedestrian from Roxboro, was hit and killed by a truck at the intersection of Sources Blvd and Roger Pilon in Dollard Des Ormeaux. A collection of information related to this event can be found at: http://aprpr.org/?p=91

As we approach the three-year anniversary of Mrs. Malecic’s death would it be possible to get an update as to what exactly has DDO undertaken to make pedestrian crossings safer, especially along Sources Blvd in DDO? »

Also, there appears to never have been published any details as to why Mrs. Malecic was hit by the truck at an intersection with full traffic and pedestrian crossing signals. There have also not been many details about the March 4th 2010 incident.

It is well known that there are a large number of seniors who live in the vicinity of Sources and Roger Pilon, as well as along Sources Blvd. I have witnessed trucks and vehicles honking their horns as they approach a yellow traffic light about to turn red in order to alert other drivers they are about to drive through a red light. And I have witnessed large trucks exiting the Rideau Funeral Home onto Sources Blvd – it is very difficult to see the driver of these large trucks from the sidewalk and on some occasions, trucks are exiting onto Sources even if the truck does not have a green light to proceed.

It would be important to ensure pedestrian crossings for young and old are as safe as possible in order to prevent unnecessary and preventable deaths in our communities.

Thank you in advance for follow up information to these questions on public safety.
