There is much concern regarding how public funds will be spent to support public transportation options, especially on the west island of Montreal.

« What is not so good for children is the complete loss of autonomy they suffer in suburbia. In this environment where all activities are segregated and distances are measured on the odometer, a child’s personal mobility extends no farther than the edge of the subdivision. Even the local softball field often exists beyond the child’s independent reach.
« The result is a new phenomenon: the ‘cul-de-sac kid’ who lives as a prisoner of a totally safe and unchallenging environment. »

Since May 14 2009, are pedestrians safer on Sources Blvd?

Ajouté par lewis le 2010/04/15

Copy of a letter sent to DDO Traffic Comitte on April 14, 2010

DDO Traffic comittee
Dollard Des Ormeaux, Qc

Re: Update on Pedestrian Safety Improvements on Sources Blvd since May 14 2009

On May 14, 2009, Mrs. Dragica Malecic, an elderly pedestrian from Roxboro, was hit and killed by a truck at the intersection of Sources Blvd and Roger Pilon in Dollard Des Ormeaux. A collection of information related to this event can be found at this link

More recently, on March 4 2010, a Mother and child were hit by a large truck at another intersection on Sources in DDO. See more info here

In an email dated June 26 2009 the mayor of DDO (See email below) writes: « We have undertaken to update our crossings and make them safer. »

Would it be possible to find out from your comittee, as we approach the 1 year anniversary of Mrs. Malecic’s death and in the wake of the recent March 4th collision, what exactly has DDO undertaken and accomplished to make pedestrian crossings safer especially along Sources Blvd in DDO?

Also, there appears to not have been many details as to why Mrs. Malecic was hit by the truck at an intersection with full traffic signals and pedestrian crossing signals. There have also not been many details about the recent March 4th 2010 incident.

Would there be any post incident information or recommendations available that could be shared with all residents, including drivers and pedestrians, so that we can learn from these unfortunate incidents and allow residents and drivers to try and avoid putting themselves in situations similar to the ones that caused these incidents in the first place?

It is well known there are a large number of seniors who live in the vicinity of Sources and Roger Pilon, as well as along Sources Blvd. It would be important to ensure pedestrian crossings for young and old are as safe as possible in order to prevent unecessary deaths in our communities.

Thank you in advance for the information provided to these questions.

You read an article in a newspaper that reported on a conversation I had with a reporter.

She told me that it was dangerous for some elderly persons to cross Sources, because they could not get across in the time allotted. I responded that if it was dangerous they should not cross.

I also told the reporter that if residents call me I will find a solution to their problem.

A second reporter did mention that I would look into installing a safe island on the median for those who could not make it across in the allotted time.

We have undertaken to update our crossings and make them safer.

10 seconds? to cross the street? – Making the city safer for pedestrians

Some letters soon followed:

Jan 14, 2010 - Letter to the editor – Lewis Poulin Roxboro
The original letter sent to The Gazette also asked the question if local officials who decided that 10 seconds was sufficient crossing time should not be held in part responsible since that decision left no choice to pedestrians but to be lulled into a false sense of security.
